Bidding Process Continues
The German bids for the European Capital of Culture in 2025 are to continue, for now, as planned.
This procedure has been proposed by the Kulturstiftung der Länder in consultation with the European Commission. For the time being, it is assumed that the bidding process can continue without postponements or other changes. The situation will be evaluated again around 19 April.
Every year, the European Union nominates a city from two member states as European Capital of Culture. Hildesheim, the smallest candidate city, made it into the second round of the competition in December 2019. Five German cities are still in the race for the title, which will be awarded for the year 2025.
Due to the current crisis, it is questionable whether the bidding process with its public events and tight schedule can be kept.
The second bid book is to be submitted as early as July 31. The European jury is scheduled to visit the Hildesheim region on 15 September. The decision on which German city may call itself European Capital of Culture 2025 is to be made on 23 September.
